Tony Rouse Cancellations?

Postby Shinyboots on Fri Nov 06, 2009 11:49 am

Has anybody heard if Tony Rouse has cancelled all of his gigs for 2010 or is it just a select number?
I have been trying to get to see Tony for a long while now, and just when I thought I had two opportunities lined up, I have heard they may be cancelled. :(
Cheers
Sue

You know sometimes people have to move on to other things if it's in their interest to do so financially.

If he wasn't making a living in the line dance world then can you blame him for going where he is going, therefore making a living?

Sometimes with line dancing - because it's fun - people don't expect the people who are providing the entertainment to need to earn a living - even though it takes up SOOO much of their time!

This is where line dancing gets a bit dodgy. Cos the professionals involved need to earn a living but the non professionals do a cheap job!

That applies to classes, socials, events etc so we have this thing where the non professionals charge a nominal fee but the professionals charge a more realistic fee, so they end up dearer. Therefore the proper people who should be doing it are potentially pushed out by the non professionals - that's not good for the future of line dancing!

Have I opened another can of worms here?

I agree with you also Rosy, just over 12 months ago I lost about a dozen people who were members of the U3A because a woman who was a social linedancer and friends with all of them opened a class in the afternoon same time as mine for the U3A at a cost of 50p (my afternoon class was only £2.50 for 1 hour & 1/4 and the ladies who went told me it was nothing to do with me just that they were part of the same group as the lady teaching it. They said they would be back when it shuts for the holidays I told them not to bother, as I had taught them from scratch and done all the hard work I was so bloody anoyed.

Happy Dancing

Hi Adrain

That's awful and I'm really sorry that's happened to you - some people have no morals or respect or gratitude.

It happens so much in line dancing though and is fairly typical - you're not alone.

There's no standard set before being able to hire a hall and start teaching and what has happened to you is all too often the damaging result.

It also is contributing to the downfall of line dancing because classes can't continue when that sort of thing goes on.

The kind of people who have done that won't think twice about enticing your people away from you - they basically don't have the professional etiquette. The price undercutting and doing a class at the same time with the same people is a prime example and as if £2.50 wasn't cheap enough!!

I don't know what the answer is.

Any ideas anyone?

Roger

Glad we're agreeing again ;) and I've replied to your Playing With Fire challenge too :D

Hi

If this is true, then it's such a shame, because although I'd only seen him the once earlier this year I was very impressed and was really looking forward to seeing him again next year when the local social had him booked :(

It is disappointing Karen, I was looking forward to seeing him at one of the Kingshill 10th Birthday party's and also at a festival in Northampton next year too.I did have a chance to see him this year but was unable to get to the gig due to work commitments, grrr!
I have read such a lot about him here on the board, and understood he gave a great night's entertainment, also seen some of the vidoe footage from his visits to the Viking on YouTube. Thanks girls and boys for confirming what I thought to be just a rumour

I heard, this weekend, that Tony cancelled a local event at the last minute last month and was replaced by a different artist who saved the day.

A sence of Deja vu here....

I booked to come over to see him at a social that Janis was holding a couple of years back and the same thing happened... he cancelled all his bookings as he wasnt going to sing again on the circut

Luckily Janis was able to have a replacement and the social was still really good and then he started again 6 months or so later

Hopefully that means in time he may get back on the linedance circuit in time... or atleast find time to do the odd gig, as it's such a shame when we loose a great talent like that. As I said I only got to see him for the first time earlier this year, despite learning we were both born in the same town, but really enjoyed seeing him and was looking forward to seeing him again next year when the club that I'd seen him at had him booked again.

At the end of the day though he needs to make a living and so he like others have to go where the work is. Funnily enough the club where I saw him at this year have reduced the number of live acts they have there next year from one every two months to one every three months, with a CD disco on the months in between, so if this is happening everywhere and less people booking live artists or booking less of them, then it's not surprising they're finding work elsewhere.

Tony was at the Viking in Selsey a few weeks ago and we all had such an excellent night. It is indeed a shame that we may not see him on the line dancing circuit. I asked him if the rumours were true and he said they were. :) Being 'on the road' meant he was spending an awful lot of time travelling, so it's not just a case of going where he can get the work, he wants to spend more time with his family.

Just to clarify matters - Tony has taken a full time job near his home location therefore: a)guaranteeing a regular income for his family and b) being able to see more of his family - he has two young children.
As he is under contract with this new job - he is not allowed to 'appear ' anywhere else - for fear of breach of contract.

I too was promised he would appear at my xmas party in December and then got a call last week to say they would not let him fulfill his existing commitments. Its a terrible shame he is no longer on the circuit - he was a gifted entertainer - I was at the Viking in Selsey and don't know of any other performer who would have done what he did - all in the name of charity! He is someone I will always consider to be a very good friend.

Lisa - it is not Deja vu - the time you are referring to was for a totally different reason ( one I am not prepared to discuss here).

I for one will miss Tony on the line dance circuit - and Paul and I wish him success in his new venture.
